미국 UC버클리대학교에서 극우 인터넷매체 '브레이트바트' 편집자 방문에 반대하는 폭력 시위가 발생했습니다.

CNN과 AFP통신에 따르면, UC버클리대 학생 1500명이 현지시간 2월 1일 브레이트바트 뉴스 편집자로 극우 '대안 우파'(alt-right·알트-라이트) 운동을 이끈 마일로 쟈노풀로스의 강연을 막기 위한 시위를 벌였습니다. 브레이트바트는 미대통령 도널드 트럼프의 최측근인 스티브 배넌 백악관 수석전략가가 설립한 매체입니다.

시위대는 "레이시스트를 위한 공간은 없다"는 메시지를 내걸로 불을 지르거나, 돌과 폭죽을 던지고 캠퍼스 창문을 부수는 등 거친 항의를 했습니다. 이 과정으로 최소 6명이 다쳤습니다.

"인종차별주의자를 위한 공간은 없다"는 등의 메시지를 내건 시위대는 "그를 막아라"는 구호를 외치며 캠퍼스 창문을 깨부수고 불을 지르거나, 폭죽과 돌을 던지며 거칠게 항의했고, 경찰과의 충돌 과정에서 최소 6명이 다쳤습니다.

이 일로 UC버클리대는 폐쇄됐으며, 쟈노풀로스의 방문 일정도 취소됐습니다. 

이에 쟈노풀로스는 "UC버클리 대학은 굉장히 자유로운 곳이다. 그들은 의견을 표현하려는 보수주의자나 자유주의자는 전부 혐오하는 사람들이다"라고 말했습니다.
